A Peek Behind The Scenes Today

Posted on October 30, 2014 | 0 comments

Here is a quick video of the behind the scenes process of creating jewelry using the ancient Keum Boo technique. This is originally a Korean technique of fusing pure 24k gold foil to pure silver, fine silver, through the use of heat and burnishing.

Starting with a sheet of fine silver, which is very soft and takes embossing beautifully, sandwich it between two textured brass sheets. The metal sandwich is then put through my rolling mill and the textures of the brass are transferred onto the fine silver through the pressure of the rollers.

The leaf shape is traced onto the embossed silver and then each piece is individually cut out with a saw. The silver leaves are then drilled with holes and sanded on the edges. Now they are ready to be heated up on the little hot plate.

As the silver is heating up, I cut out a tiny hydrangea flower shape from a sheet of paper thin 24k gold. Very carefully the gold piece is placed with tweezers onto the silver piece that has been heated. This process is a little stressful because the gold can easily tear or get blown off the silver at this point. The gold flower is then gently burnished down onto the silver with various metal tools using a circular motion.

The metals are permanently fused together through this process. It will usually take about a minute or two, depending on the heat which is between 500-700 degrees. There isn’t any glue or adhesive of any kind used, the fusing is done through the heat and burnishing.

I am in the middle of creating a series of new Keum Boo jewelry pieces. Some of them I will leave as is with the silver and gold combination and others I will dip into a silver blackening solution to create a gold and black combination. Here are some examples of the finished jewelry. As you can see through this video, each piece is a one of a kind original creation. No two pieces are alike.

Garden of Silver Trunk Shows

Posted on August 08, 2013 | 0 comments

Hi Jewelry Lovers,
I am setting up my schedule for the holiday season and would like to know if anyone is interested in hosting a Garden of Silver Trunk Show (AKA Jewelry Party)?

I will provide $100 towards the purchase of appetizers/wine and arrive with a large selection of my handmade jewelry for your guests to purchase that evening.

The jewelry will range from $25-$250 so there will be something for everyone’s budget. My pieces are all individually handmade from sterling silver and some pieces have touches of 24K gold accents. Some of the pieces can be seen on my website but I usually bring the newest creations. I also have a very large selection of handmade, one of a kind, fused art glass wrapped in sterling pendants as well. Perfect for holiday gifts. Your guests can purchase by check, credit card, PayPal or cash and leave with their jewelry that evening so there is nothing else you have to do.

I am happy to provide you with an invitation you can email to your guests or paper ones if you prefer. Usually these trunk shows last about two hours with a minimum of 10 guests.  Right now I am only doing shows in the NY/NJ/CT areas.

The hostess will also receive $150 in free jewelry of your choice as a thank you from Garden of Silver. Please let me know if you are interested via email or give me a call. I appreciate your support of my handmade in the USA jewelry company.

XOXO

Navy Seal Jewelry

Posted on February 16, 2013 | 0 comments

A very good friend of my husband is an elite Navy Seal currently serving our country. Last year he had asked me if I would design a piece of jewelry for him to give to his future wife. He told me about his favorite myth and wanted me to design the piece based on the story.

Both history and mythology are combined in this heartwarming story. Coma Berenices is an actual constellation, located near Leo. Its name literally means "Berenice's Hair".  Berenice  was an Egyptian Queen and her husband was off serving at war. The myth states that Berenice was so concerned about the safety of her husband, that she promised the goddess Aphrodite that she would sacrifice her beautiful blonde hair if her husband returned home from war safely.

Her husband did return safely. Faithful to her word, she cut off her hair and offered it to the gods who had watched over her husband. The gods were so pleased with Berenices sacrifice that they placed her hair into the heavens creating the constellation.

With 'full artistic license' I came up with a number of designs which I e-mailed to him while he was overseas and he chose this one.  The silver circle represents both earth and the moon. The gold strands represent Berenice's beautiful blonde hair, and the diamonds are the stars which create the actual constellation.

Creating this piece was such an honor for me to do. I cried when he e-mailed me the story. The loved ones of military personnel are going through their own battles. My heart goes out to the families for enduring many sacrifices and I thank those men and women who choose to serve our country. Especially the amazing Navy Seals!!!
